DCP Mastering

SpectiCast offers affordable, high-quality, and fully DCI compliant mastering of Digital Cinema Packages for major media distributors, independent filmmakers, alternative content providers, and exhibitors. We handle the end-to-end conversion of your media files into DCP.

Why get my film mastered as a DCP?

The industry standard for projection of digital cinema is the DCP. This includes everyone from independent art-house cinemas to major cinema chains. While there are still a few theaters that only play 35mm, they are disappearing fast - and when they do, you can be sure they will be installing a DCI compliant system that will play DCPs. To ensure that your film will be playable in all of these theaters, you need a DCP.

Just about every major film festival accepts film submissions on DCPs and many require it. The two most commonly accepted formats for digital delivery to film festivals are DCP and HDCAM tape. Converting your film to HDCAM tape costs about as much as creating a DCP and it can only be used at facilities equipped with costly HDCAM decks. These decks are expensive, are hard to find, and are disappearing quickly. Converting your film to DCP means you can submit it to the festival, and keep a copy for exhibition at any DCI equipped theater across the globe.

Additionally, for your film to be considered for an Oscar®, it needs to have been exhibited on 35mm film or DCP.

How much does it cost?

For a typical two-hour film, we charge $1,500 plus a $100 setup fee to create your DCP. If your film runs longer than two hours, there is an additional $15/min.

Subtitles

If your DCP needs subtitling, the DCI spec provides a means to avoid the headache of burned-in subtitles. Subtitles in DCPs can be turned on or off as needed, and multiple languages can be shipped together in one DCP thereby reducing distribution and storage costs.

If you already have subtitle files, we can add them to your DCP for $200 per language. If your film needs translation and subtitle files created, contact us for a quote. We work directly with the industry-leading provider of subtitles and translation services.

How long does it take?

How do I prepare my source media?

Format

Our preferred format for delivery of films to our facility is ProRes 422 HQ, but we can accept just about any format without incurring extra charges, including: DNxHD, DCDM, image sequence (DNxHD, TIFF, PNG, etc). If your content is on tape, contact us for a conversion quote.

Frame Rate / Aspect Ratio

The DCI spec requires DCPs to be at least 1080p HD in size and run at either 24fps or 48fps (HFR). If your master is not at either of these rates, it will need to be converted or retimed. When we receive your media we will inspect it and inform you of any special requirements before we proceed.
